In this standards-based humanities lesson, students explore the contributions
of Latinos by researching individual's contributions to American culture.
The lesson culminates in the creation of an artistic piece representing
Latino achievements.
Grappling
with Identity in Latino Poetry, grades 9-12

In this language arts lesson, students explore the experience of grappling
with identigy by looking at the nation's demographics, and reading how
this has made an impact on American media. After becoming aware of some
of the issues surrounding Latinos, students read a collection of poems
on the subject, written by Latino writers. In the end students reflect
on what they've learned by creating a multimedia collage.
Latinos
in America, grades 7-12

In this lesson, students learn what is meant by the labels "Latino," "Latin
American," and "Hispanic." Students will study immigration rates from
different Latin American countries and compare these rates with immigration
from the Dominican Republic. Finally, students will learn more about Latino
communities in different areas of the U.S.
Weaving and Community
Traditions 4-8

In this lesson, students will research Latino artists and how their works
of art reflect community traditions. Students will also explore children's
literature and will write or weave their own story about respecting their
elders, appreciating the extended family, and the importance of learning
folk arts that have been passed on through generations.
